This 2014 film tells the story of a Cheryl Strayed (Witherspoon), who sets out to hike 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, despite a complete lack of hiking experience.
The hike is a journey of self discovery and healing; and features flashbacks during the story of her childhood as well as depression, heroin, anonymous sex and an abortion. She resolved to hike the trail to redeem herself and get her life back on track.
