Adventure Breaks have put together a selection of 8 inspirational adventure and survival films – all available for free on Netflix – to keep you entertained. Four are documentaries and four are movies that are based on true stories.

1. Losing Sight of Shore

Four women set out to row across the Pacific Ocean, from America to Australia. As they row over 8,000 miles during their nine months at sea, they must overcome extreme mental and physical challenges to make history.

2. Gun Runners

Two kenyan outlaws, Julius Arile and Robert Matanda, suddenly disappear from the Kenyan bush. Many assumed they were dead or had been arrested, but instead they had traded in their rifles for sneakers under an amnesty in the hopes of making it big as professional marathon runners. Told entirely by its central characters, Gun Runners is the American Dream, Kenyan-style.

3. The Dawn Wall

Climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgesen take on the challenge of free-climbing Yosemite’s most formidable rock formation; The Dawn Wall of El Capitan in California.

4. The Great Alone

Billed as 'The Last Great Race on Earth', the Iditarod Trail is the toughest dog sled race in the world. Snaking through over a thousand miles of the Arctic's harshest wilderness, the race is one of Alaska's proudest traditions and Lance Mackey is its greatest champion. He's a man with dog sled racing hard wired into his family, across generations. And he's a man who has battled homelessness, addiction and cancer, but who has always returned to the sled.

MOVIES BASED ON A TRUE STORY


1. The Impossible

In December 2004, Maria (Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three sons begin their winter vacation in Thailand. But the day after Christmas, the idyllic holiday turns into an incomprehensible nightmare when a terrifying roar rises from the depths of the sea, followed by a wall of black water that devours everything in its path. Though Maria and her family face their darkest hour, unexpected displays of kindness and courage ameliorate their terror.

2. Wild

Driven to the edge by the loss of her beloved mother, the dissolution of her marriage and a headlong dive into self-destructive behavior, Cheryl Strayed (Reese Witherspoon) makes a decision to halt her downward spiral and put her life back together again. With no outdoors experience, a heavy backpack and little else to go on but her own will, Cheryl sets out alone to hike the Pacific Crest Trail - one of the country's longest and toughest through-trails.

3. Unbroken

As a boy, Louis "Louie" Zamperini is always in trouble, but with the help of his older brother, he turns his life around and channels his energy into running, later qualifying for the 1936 Olympics. When World War II breaks out, Louie enlists in the military. After his plane crashes in the Pacific, he survives an incredible 47 days adrift in a raft, until his capture by the Japanese navy. Sent to a POW camp, Louie becomes the target of a particularly cruel prison commander.

4. Solo

A young surfer falls off a cliff, injures himself and finds himself in a situation where he needs to fight for his survival. This is an international film, with English sub-titles.
